“Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Big Plans for Little People

What if God had something in mind for you from the time you were born — even before? What if you started to train for it right after you stopped drinking out of a baby bottle?

That’s what happened to Samuel. Before he was even born, his mother promised that he would be brought up in the temple by Eli. Right after he was weaned, she took him to Eli, and he had to start early learning about the duties of a priest.

But God had something even bigger in mind for Samuel. He revealed to him, in person, what was going to happen to Eli’s sons. It was a huge thing, a thing Samuel then had to tell Eli, a thing that made him very sad. Eli had let God down by not disciplining his sons for the wrong they’d done in the temple, and God wasn’t going to let that go.

Big hard stuff for Samuel, and yet he did it. He was only about twelve years old when God began this work in him. As he grew up, everybody realized that Samuel was a prophet, a person God revealed himself to.
