“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.”

— Isaiah 42:1

Sensing God’s Smile

It feels so good when a person you look up to is proud of you. You probably sit up taller and get a big ol’ grin on your face. And best of all, you want to do even better.

What if GOD said that about you? He actually does sometimes. Can’t you feel God’s pleasure when you help your little brother with his homework, even though he has recently flushed yours down the toilet? Don’t you experience God’s pride when you refuse to spread that rumor that would really get you some attention? God loves it when we do it his way. He delights in us.

We’re all constantly doing things that disappoint him. But being the great Maker of Promises, God promised us that he would send someone in whom he delighted every minute of every day. Someone who could show us how to be better in the delighting-God department, so that the world we live in would be more fair.

God announced that this someone was here in a loud, clear voice when Jesus was baptized. He said from heaven, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). Jesus is here, showing us how to please God too.
