“Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters.’ ”

— Matthew 17:4

Baby Steps

You can fix macaroni and cheese out of a box and make a mean peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Think you’re ready to cook a whole meal by yourself for the entire family?

Once you get a taste of something, it’s easy to think you’re ready for the whole enchilada, but most big skills take time to learn, and that’s especially true of spiritual things.

Peter didn’t know that yet when Jesus chose him, along with James and John, to go up a high mountain with him. There, they saw him glow with godliness as he talked to Moses and Elijah (long since dead). Jesus picked Peter because he was learning and growing, and Jesus knew he could trust him. But when he saw the three spirits together, Peter showed that he didn’t totally understand it. He wanted to put up tents for them! What a silly idea!

And that’s okay. Faith is a journey, and who better than Peter to show us that, because he’s so very much like us. Keep stumbling along. Every experience with God brings you closer to understanding.
