“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

— Matthew 7:24

Solid Rock

They had some pretty big rainstorms in the land where Jesus lived. You may have seen some like them, where the rain comes down in sheets and washes away big chunks of dirt and sand. You might even have heard about mudslides, where whole houses tumble down a mountain when the big rains come.

Then, as now, it was best to build a house on a strong foundation — like rock. It wasn’t going to move and it wasn’t going to wash away. God is described as a rock sometimes, because he doesn’t move away, and he’s always there for protection. It also makes sense, then, to build your life on rock, the God-rock.

That means making your decisions based on God’s ways. Think about God’s love in the way you treat other people. Move forward with God’s promises in your mind. If you do that, you won’t be “washed away” when the “rains” come. There’s no time like now to find that rock and start building.
