“Yet faith comes from listening to this message of good news — the Good News about Christ.”

— Romans 10:17 (NLT)

Walking by Faith

Dawn’s faith was tested when her parents divorced, and she moved from a small town to a big city. From a sprawling house on a quiet street, she moved into a noisy fourth-floor apartment. In her small school, she’d been in musical groups and always had a part in the spring play. At her huge new school, she felt like a drop of water in the ocean — invisible and swallowed up. And yet, Dawn faced each day expecting something good to happen. She trusted that God had everything under control and would bring good out of it.

Where did she get such faith in the face of so many unwelcome changes? The Word of God. She repeated these verses every day: “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’ ” (Jeremiah 29:11); and “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). Why does speaking God’s Word have such power? “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow” (Hebrews 4:12).
