“The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’ ”
— 1 Samuel 3:10
Monica felt a nudge, almost a gentle whisper inside, when she first met the girl in the apartment next door. Monica hoped they could be friends and walk to school together, since they were in the same grade. However, her internal alarm whispered, “Don’t trust her.” The following week Monica overheard the girl lie to her mother about where she’d been. Later, after the girl visited Monica’s apartment, some money was missing from her room. Was the funny feeling in her stomach the Lord trying to warn Monica about her new friend?
We must be alert and notice when God is trying to get our attention. Remember when God talked to Moses out of the burning bush? Moses could have been so self-focused that he never noticed the bush off to the side. But Moses was paying attention. “So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, ‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am’ ” (Exodus 3:4 NKJV).
Invite God to speak to you. Like Moses, pay attention to your surroundings. Like Samuel, perk up your ears and say, “Talk to me, Lord. I’m listening.”
