“Jonathan said to David, ‘Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you.’ ”
— 1 Samuel 20:4
Have you ever been friends with somebody that it didn’t make sense for you to be friends with — but you just loved each other? Your mother and hers did NOT care for each other, but you two really hit it off.
That’s the way it was with Jonathan and David. Jonathan’s father was King Saul. God had already said David was going to replace Saul, and Saul wasn’t having it. He was out to get David, and David was running scared. But David and Jonathan were best friends. It was Jonathan David went to and said, “How have I wronged your father, that he is trying to kill me?” (1 Samuel 20:1).
You’d think Jonathan would have been torn between his best bud and his dad, but Jonathan immediately said, “Never! You are not going to die!” Then he offered to do anything to help David escape Saul’s wrath.
Jonathan wasn’t being loyal to his blood family. His loyalty was to God’s family. How did he know which to choose? How do we know? God puts it in us to be able to decide on his side. As members of that family, the love is deep inside us. Like Jonathan, we only have to listen to it.
