“So let’s not grow tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”

— Galatians 6:9 (NLT)

Hanging in There

Natasha and Janice had signed up to be vacation Bible school volunteers. But halfway through the session, the newness wore off, and Janice decided it was way too much work. Besides, she had volunteered for a week, and that was enough. So she told the VBS director she was burnt out. Then she quit.

Natasha hung in for the entire three weeks, honoring her commitment, and when VBS ended, she felt a sense of real accomplishment. And what’s more, on the last day, the class thanked her with a hand-painted card.

See, doing good isn’t only admirable — it’s one of our jobs as Christians. God wants us to be his helpers. He wants to accomplish his will through us. He wants to be able to say, like the master in Jesus’ parable, “Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21 NLT). But to do that, we have to stay the course — continue doing good — not for a day or even a year but until God’s work is completed. And that won’t be until Jesus comes again. When he does, girls who’ve remained faithful because of the “strength and energy that God supplies” (1 Peter 4:11 NLT) will get paid in full.
