“But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.”

— Psalm 5:11

Count It All Joy

A refuge is a safe place, protected from attack or violent storms. It’s a place you can run to, and you’ll be safe as long as you stay there. God is our refuge too. When you’re going through tough times, when you’re afraid, he’s the best place to go for shelter. Not only will you be safe, but you’ll be so relieved that you’ll sing for joy!

We don’t always run to God for help or shelter when we’re going through trouble. You might eat a candy bar when upset, or go shopping, or zone out with a gripping movie. Will that help? Not really. You might forget your troubles for a short time, but you won’t feel happy or cheerful for long. That only comes — and stays — when you seek shelter from your dangers or hardships by going to God, in his Word and in prayer.

Sometimes, before you actually feel the joy, you have to praise and worship God by faith. In other words, you praise him when you don’t really feel like it. But if you do this, if you choose to be cheerful, your joy will bubble to the surface. Don’t be surprised if you even burst into song!
