“Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, miserable prisoners in chains. They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High.”

— Psalm 107:10 – 11 (NLT)

Afraid of the Dark

What a frightening picture! Prisoners in chains, sitting in terrible dread and depression. They decided to reject the words of God, his advice and guidance, and do what they pleased instead. The end result was miserable despair — a result they chose for themselves.

People who are afraid of the dark keep all the lights on so they feel safe. Would it make sense, if you’re afraid of the dark, to turn off the lights at midnight, then sit in pitch blackness? Of course not, but that’s what some people do. They invite darkness and misery into their lives by living in rebellion of God’s Word. By rejecting godly advice and counsel, they become prisoners in chains. They are prisoners to hatred or an out of control appetite. If they have accepted Jesus as Savior, they’ll still go to heaven. But they won’t enjoy their days on earth much!

Are you now stuck with a problem that has you in despair? If so, don’t hesitate another minute. Flip on that light switch. Go to God, confess, and let him help you burst those chains.
