“Two things have I heard: ‘Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love.’ ”

— Psalm 62:11 – 12

Walking the Tightrope

Have you figured this one out yet?

You’re supposed to be nice to people, but you shouldn’t let them walk all over you. You’re supposed to include the kids nobody else wants to hang out with, but sometimes those are the kids who get in trouble, and that’s bad for you.

It’s like walking a tightrope sometimes. It requires way more balance than most of us have. Fortunately, God is your Personal Balance.

God asks us to love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves, but sometimes loving somebody means you have to do something that person isn’t going to like. For example, your best friend is amazing, but she’s gotten pretty bossy lately. You have to tell her you’re tired of being pushed around and you’d like to get back on even terms again.

The right thing seems pretty clear — until you’re in the middle of the situation. Just get quiet and ask God how you can be both loving and strong. Somebody might wonder why you’re standing there with your eyes closed. If anybody asks, just say you’re trying to get your balance.
