“All those who exalt themselves will be humbled.”

— Luke 18:14

Nobody Wins the Comparison Game

God wants you to know that you were worth creating. He loves you so much and didn’t make a single mistake with you! But when we remember this, we have to be careful that we don’t fall into the “I was more worth creating than she was” trap.

It might come out something like, “Well, I may not be as pretty as she is, but I’m WAY smarter.” It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that’s just a way to make yourself feel better when some drop-dead gorgeous girl walks in and everybody goes, “Ooo!” If it gets to be a habit, you actually start believing you’re a better person than everyone else.

Jesus told a story about a Pharisee who prayed, “Thank you that I’m not a loser like other people. I do everything right,” and a tax collector who prayed, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” God, Jesus said, would look much more kindly on the second man, who was honest about himself.

You don’t need to beat your chest like that tax collector did, but do look at yourself as you really are. Both the good stuff and the stuff that still needs work are worthy before God.
