“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

— Psalm 23:4

No Fear!

The rod and staff were sticks used by shepherds for counting, guiding, rescuing, and protecting their sheep. The Bible says that we are sheep, and Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He is close beside us, to protect and comfort us.

We all need protection sometimes. You may not understand why girls at your middle school torment you. You’re positive you’ve never said or done anything to them. They may not physically hurt you, but they terrify you just the same.

What have you focused on recently? If we focus on the fearful situation, it will appear impossible to overcome. Focusing on God’s promises, on the other hand, gives us strength and lessens the fear. Start with these: “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 118:6). “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life” (Psalm 138:7).

No matter what you’re going through right now, your response can be, “I will not fear!” Speak it out loud forcefully several times. Focus on God’s power, and you’ll feel the comfort of God promises.
