“Burning of the Capitol of Alabama on December 14, 1849” with a view up Market Street (today’s Dexter Avenue) from the artesian well. Philadelphian Stephen Decatur Button designed this Capitol; it served from 1847 until it burned in 1849. Two hotels are included: Madison House on the left and Montgomery Hall on the right. Sarony and Majors of New York made this lithograph from A. G. Parks’s daguerreotype, which he took from the Court House steps.
