When the first draft of your book has been written you should begin a long process of improvements before committing the words to printed form. The first thing to do is to look at the overall structure of the book. Would it work better if the first two chapters were swapped around? Do the chapters progress in a logical manner? Does it need a subplot? should there be a progressive character arc? Does it need more comedy or more gravitas? Structuring your book doesn’t mean changing the odd word -it’s about looking objectively at the order of the chapters and the progression of the story or the argument and deciding whether it should be altered. A book can benefit from restructuring if it means that the new opening chapter is stronger, if the chapter endings become cliffhangers to tempt people to keep reading, or if the pace and balance of the book are improved.
