The truth is,
I am kind of mad at Grace.
Everyone worked so hard
to get her room ready,
to make things
nice for her.
I remember seeing
a family on TV once—
they had been homeless,
living in their car
near railroad tracks.
A group of firefighters
got together
and rented a house
for the family.
They gave them clothes
and toys,
food and furniture.
And the people were
so grateful.
They just beamed
into the TV camera.
Months later,
I saw the follow-up story.
The parents had jobs.
The kids were doing
great in school.
The family invited
the firefighters over
for a backyard picnic.
It was all so nice
and normal
and happily-ever-after.
Why couldn’t Grace be like
that TV family?
