The CCS moved to Lijssenthoek, where Nellie was buried, with full military honors and the Last Post was played.
Activities
Time to explore the cemetery. The Chinese graves are usually of particular interest; many of these men will have died from the 1918- 1919 influenza ‘Spanish flu’ outbreak. They were employed to clear up the battlefields after the war. You may wish to go to the grave of Private William Baker (XXV-B-22) who was ‘Shot at Dawn’ as a prelude to the visit to the execution post at Poperinge later in the day. Also, there used to be many more American burials here – a discussion on repatriation differences between combat nations might be interesting; American servicemen and women who died on active duty are all eligible for burial at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. or at a private cemetery elsewhere in the U.S.A.15
