This is Tyne Cot cemetery; it is the largest British military cemetery in the world. There are 11,953 burials, 8,366, or nearly 70 per cent, are unknown. This gives some idea about the dreadful nature of the fighting that these men endured.
The name Tyne Cot is thought to derive from the fact that during Third Ypres the 50th (Northumbrian) Division fought here and gave some cottages nearby the name.22
