Add together the two numbers by modeling the numbers—in other words, by drawing out the tins and buns. (Just rectangles and circles or baby squares are fine!) And then write out the full math sentence. I’ll do the first one for you!
Let’s Play: Okay, let’s see what this is saying. In blue, we have 4 tens and 3 ones, so that’s the number 43, right? In red, we have 2 tens and 1 one, so that’s 21. We want to add 43 + 21, right? Great! First we’ll ask: How many total tens do we have? 4 blue tens and 2 red tens make 6 tens total, since 4 + 2 = 6. And then we ask: How many total ones do we have? 3 blue and 1 red make 4 ones total, since 3 + 1 = 4! Let’s put ’em together in a drawing:
That means we should put 6 in the tens place and 4 in the ones place, and we get 64! The full math sentence would be 43 + 21 = 64.
Answer: 43 + 21 = 64 (and the picture we drew above)
