Add these three-digit numbers by rewriting them and stretching out the kitties on the kitty pile! I’ll do the first one for you.
Let’s Play: This might seem scary at first, but not if we think about our cuddly meowntain. First, we’ll write the numbers on top of each other:
…and then we stretch the kitties! Since there are 0 tens in 107, it’s a good idea to put a 0 in that spot so we can keep everything straight when we’re adding.
Next we circle the hundreds together, the tens together, and the ones together, and add ’em together!
How about that? Meow!
Answer: 839
(Hint: Stack them up!)
Now let’s practice subtracting big piles of kitties!
Subtract these three-digit numbers by stretching out the kitties on the kitty pile! I’ll do the first one for you.
Let’s Play: First, let’s rewrite this as a kitty pile:
Next we’ll stretch these kitties out….
Then we circle the hundreds together, the tens together, and the ones together, and subtract down!
Finally, we take the expanded 500 + 20 + 0 and put it back together as 520. Nicely done!
Answer: 520
(Hint: Stack them first like we did in #1!)
