The text I have worked from is that of the Pali Text Society (Hinüber and Norman 1995).
There are two different systems of numbering in use for the verses of the Dhammapada: a continuous numbering, 1–423, that runs throughout the work, and a separate numbering within each chapter. So the same verse could be referred to either as 326 or as 23.7. Since references in other texts are usually to the continuous numbering, I have used that as my main system, but noted the numbers in the alternative system at the beginning of each chapter.
To avoid scattering the pages of the translation with superscript numbers, and allow the reader to experience the verses undistracted if he or she wishes, I have keyed the endnotes to the numbers of the verses themselves. Comments there are headed by a brief quotation of the words being commented on.
