At lunchtime the next day, Clara stood at the edge of the camp, Bob at her side. They watched the Gypsies connecting the caravans to the trucks and slowly filing out of the clearing. As the leader of the group, Des’s caravan was the last one to leave.
Clara walked over to the small group that remained. Grams gave Clara a big hug.
“I think this is the longest period of time we’ve ever stayed in one place,” she said and sighed as she took a last look around. Clara got the impression from Grams’ expression that she was really rather relieved that they were on the move again. “Take care of yourself, Clara. And don’t worry, we’ll be back before you know it.”
Clara nodded and swallowed the lump in her throat. To Clara’s surprise, Des also gave her a quick, rough hug.
“Watch your back, girl,” he said, and gave her a clumsy pat on the shoulder before helping Grams into the passenger seat of the truck.
Luke turned to Clara. “Well, I guess this is it,” he said, hooking his thumbs into his jeans pockets. Unable to stop herself, Clara threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
Luke laughed. “I can’t breathe,” he said.
Clara let him go. “You be careful,” she said to him fiercely.
“Don’t worry, I will,” he said, punching her gently on the shoulder. “I’ll see ya.”
Des started the engine of the truck and shouted at Luke to get a move on. Luke jumped in the back seat and slammed the door. The wheels spun slightly, then the truck and caravan moved slowly off across the bumpy ground.
Clara watched them until they were out of sight.
She glanced down at Bob. “Looks like it’s just you and me again,” she said to him. Bob whined and his tail thumped as he gazed back up at her. Clara stroked his head, then turned to walk back towards the woodland. She was wondering what to do with herself – she didn’t feel like going to the hilltop today – when she noticed a figure wander out of the distant treeline. Bob perked his ears up and trotted towards the figure. She could see them flinch, as if nervous of the dog, so she quickened her pace. When she got closer she realised it was Peter.
He looked at her hopefully.
Clara sighed. She was actually glad to have his company; she didn’t feel like being alone right now.
“Wanna go to the newsagents and get some sweets?” she asked. Peter nodded eagerly, and the three of them walked towards the woods. As they got there, Clara couldn’t help turning and taking one last look at where the Gypsy campsite had been.
The dust from the exodus had already settled. Apart from scorch marks on the ground where the central fire had been, it was as if the Gypsies had never been there.
“Until next time,” Clara murmured, before turning away and catching up with Peter and Bob.
