On the third of their ten orbits, the Apollo 8 astronauts got their first glimpse of the Earth rising over the moon. They had to move fast to capture the image before the Earth drifted out of frame. The historic shot became known simply as “Earthrise,” and would be credited with helping to launch the environmental movement.
