Chapter 1
Tier 2 word: Suppose
Prompt: In the text, Dylan supposes, or thinks it could be true, that Riley could win the games because she is fast. Do you think the Camp Leaf games could all be won by being fast? What other skills could help win the games?
Tier 2 word: Marched
Prompt: In the text, Mrs. Fan marched, or walked quickly, down the path to show the trophy. Would you rather march to the playground or the lunchroom?
Chapter 2
Tier 2 word: Vanish
Prompt: In the text, the trophy has vanished and can’t be seen or found. Where are some places in the classroom you would look if our pencil sharpener vanished? What if our desks vanished?
Tier 2 word: Frown
Prompt: In the text, Mrs. Fan frowns. Sometimes a frown means unhappiness. Sometimes we frown when we are thinking hard about something. Why do you think Mrs. Fan frowned? Could it have had something to do with her not wanting the kids to bother the campers?
Tier 2 word: Connection
Prompt: In the text, Paige talks about the connection of paths in the campground. The connection links together the campsites, lake, restrooms, and office. What are some spaces that the school hallways and sidewalks connect? How about our classroom, cafeteria, and playground?
Chapter 3
Tier 2 word: Details
Prompt: In the text, Paige shares some details, or small facts, about the campground. What are some details you can see about the cover of this book? What about the color? Who is the author? What is the picture showing us?
Tier 2 word: Prefer
Prompt: In the text, Paige shares that she prefers, or chooses, to learn about things other than detective work. Do you prefer to practice math or reading? Do you prefer ice cream or candy?
Tier 2 word: Include
Prompt: In the story, we learn which activities are included, or part of, the Camp Leaf games. The games include a water balloon toss, an egg spoon race, slingshot targets, fishing, juggling, tug-of-war, a scavenger hunt with riddles, and a talent show. Which game would be your favorite? What game would you like added to the Camp Leaf games?
Chapter 4
Tier 2 word: Plan
Prompt: In the text, Dylan comes up with a new plan to ask questions. A plan helps us choose a way to do something before we do it. Let’s pretend it’s going to snow tomorrow. You might choose to get out your gloves, coat, and boots tonight so you’ll be ready to play in the snow tomorrow. You might ask your parents to check and see if school is canceled. What other plans could you make about the snow?
Tier 2 word: Matter
Prompt: In the text, the Benny brothers said what they were doing didn’t matter. When something matters, it is a big deal. Do you think it matters if we get enough sleep? What about if we skip recess?
Chapter 5
Tier 2 word: Investigate
Prompt: In the text, Theodore investigates the yo-yo to find out what it is. He wants to know if it is food or a toy. When we investigate, we want to know the facts about something. What are some ways we could investigate a wrapped present? How about if we picked it up to see how heavy it is? What if we shook it to see if it makes a sound?
Tier 2 word: Avoid
Prompt: In the text, Alex avoids looking at the others. When we avoid something, we stop or keep ourselves from doing something. Alex didn’t let himself look at the others. When it rains, would you avoid a wet puddle or would you jump into it?
Chapter 6
Tier 2 word: Lean
Prompt: In the text, the tent leaned, or bent to the side, when Dylan knocked the tent poles against each other. Do you think you’d rather sleep in a tent that stood up straight or one that leaned?
Chapter 7
Tier 2 word: Notice
Prompt: In the text, Caleb said he didn’t notice, or see, Riley with the trophy. What do you think kept him from noticing her?
Chapter 8
Tier 2 word: Plan
Prompt: In the text, Paige thinks they need a new plan, or way, to find the trophy. What have the kids tried so far? What else do you think they could try?
Tier 2 word: Gather
Prompt: In the text, Dylan wants to gather, or bring together, all of the suspects. What kinds of questions would you have if you gathered all of the suspects together in one place?
Tier 2 word: Notice
Prompt: In the text, Emily noticed, or saw, that Caleb had left his backpack. What do you think Caleb would have done if Emily hadn’t noticed the backpack?
Chapter 9
Tier 2 word: Gather
Prompt: In the text, Dylan gathers, or brings together, rocks for slingshot practice. If our class had a field trip to the beach, what are some items we would gather for the trip? How about sunscreen, swimsuits, snacks, or towels?
Chapter 10
Tier 2 word: Opinion
Prompt: In the text, Alex’s opinion, or feelings, about the Camp Leaf games changes. How did he feel about the games at the beginning of the book? What about at the end? Why do you think he felt that way?
