Further reading

Etruscan buffs will relish George Dennis’s beautifully illustrated 1848 masterpiece The Cities and Cemeteries of Etruria, free online nowadays. Henry James’s Italian Hours (Penguin Classics, 1992) is a collection of travel essays written between 1872 and 1909. War in Val d’Orcia by Iris Origo is a diary of World War II events on a farm there. Rather more recent are books by Frances Mayes, such as the delightful Under the Tuscan Sun, set near Cortona.

For the adventurous long-distance trek – the Grande Escursione Appenninica (or GEA) – that follows the central Apennine ridge north, all the way from Tuscany’s southern border with Umbria and the Marche to where it enters Liguria, see Cicerone’s Trekking in the Apennines (2016).

For walks and climbs in the Alpi Apuane, see The Alps of Tuscany by Francesco Greco (Tamari Montagna Edizioni, 1998).

Wildflower enthusiasts are advised to obtain a field guide such as Mediterranean Wild Flowers by Marjorie Blamey and Christopher Grey-Wilson (Collins), or the classic Flowers of the Mediterranean by Oleg Polunin and Anthony Huxley (Chatto & Windus).
