It would be impossible for me to write a book about fathers and sons without dedicating it to my own father, David Plakcy. I share some of his stubbornness, which led to a lot of drama when I was growing up. But as time wore on I realized that he loved me a great deal, and that he was trying to mold me into someone who could, like Angus, Kimo, Aidan and Liam, survive a difficult world.
I was fortunate to be able to spend the last years of his life with him, in a high-rise condo my parents had bought for their retirement. He spent his time snoozing on the balcony, overlooking a big lake, and he loved to be able to look down at the clear water and spot large fish. The love of water in all its forms has been a constant connection between us, and the fact that I live near the ocean is a testament to how deeply he ingrained that love in me.
Part of this dedication also goes to my husband Marc and our golden retrievers, Brody and Griffin, who provide me with love and support.
To Marc: Somewhere in the crowd there’s you.
