HUT TO HUT IN THE ZILLERTAL ALPS

Any number of multi-day hut-to-hut tours could be created in this magnificent range of mountains. The following outline routes will give an idea of the possibilities.

ROUTE 36
The Berliner Höhenweg
Start Finkenberg (850m)
Finish Breitlahner (1257m)
Distance 42km
Grade 3
Time 3–4 days
Location Counter-clockwise, from Finkenberg to Breitlahner
Highest point Schönbichler Scharte (3081m)

This splendid route links five huts positioned along the flanks of the Zemmgrund and Zamsergrund valleys above Mayrhofen. Given settled conditions the route should be feasible between mid-June and the end of September, when the huts are wardened. Please note that at the start of the season an ice axe and crampons may be required.

Day 1 The route begins in Finkenberg, the small village 3km upvalley of Mayrhofen at the entrance to the Tuxertal. From the village at just 850m, the way climbs southwestward more than 1200m up the Gamsberg to reach the Gams Hut at 1928m in 3½hrs.

Day 2 A much longer and more demanding stage, this follows the trail at mid-height across the west flank of the valley, linking several alms on a 14km walk which gains and loses a lot of height. After a tough day of 10hrs plus rests, the stage ends at the Friesenberghaus, built at 2477m near a small tarn on the slopes of the Hoher Riffler.

Day 3 With the scenery becoming ever more dramatic, this stage angles down to the Olperer Hut (1½hrs) overlooking the Schlegeis reservoir, then drops to the bed of the Zamsergrund and goes along the southwest side of the reservoir to its upper end. From there the trail climbs a short distance to the Furtschaglhaus at 2293m (5½hrs in all). Above the hut the shrinking glacial scarf of the Schlegeiskees hangs across the valley headwall between the Hochfeiler and Grosser Möseler.

Day 4 Good settled weather is needed for this stage, as the höhenweg crosses the highest part of the route at the 3081m Schönbichler Scharte (fixed ropes and considerable exposure). From the start of the day the trail makes directly for the scharte with a climb of 788m. Both sides of the col are steep, and snow often lies well into the summer. Extra caution is needed. After the initial difficulties across the col have been dealt with, the route cuts down into the head of the Zemmgrund (several streams to cross) to reach the magnificent Berliner Hut (2042m) after 6–7hrs of exhilerating trekking.

Day 5 The Berliner Höhenweg ends with an easy valley walk on a track most of the way to the GasthofBreitlahner (2½hrs) and the bus stop for Mayrhofen.
