Formerly known as the Kelchalm Berghaus, the Bochumer Hut stands on the right flank of the Kelchalmgraben valley with several walkers’ mountains accessible from it. A very pleasant hut owned by the Bochum section of the DAV, it’s staffed throughout the year, except in November and part of April, and makes a good destination for a walk, or a base for further exploration. The small village of Hechenmoos, where the approach walk begins, stands beside the road to Pass Thurn, and is served by bus from Kitzbühel.

From the Hechenmoos bus stop cross the road and enter the Kelchalmgraben valley by Gasthof Hechenmoos, soon passing several other gasthofs and hotels. When the road forks after about 3mins take the right branch, and in 20mins you will reach the tiny Grüntal chapel where a track breaks left to Oberaurach. Ignoring this track continue up the farm road which remains on the north side of the Wieseneggbach torrent. The valley is narrow, wooded and very pleasant, and in season wild strawberries and raspberries may be gathered.

About 40mins from Hechenmoos the dirt road makes a sharp left-hand bend. Leave it here and take the track ahead which serves as a shortcut. The track narrows to a footpath rising through woodland beside the river, and eventually reunites with the road.

The road brings you to the ruins of a mine, about 1hr from Hechenmoos, and 5mins later you leave the road for a signed track heading left. This snakes uphill and leads directly to the Bochumer Hut.
