As one of the highest summits in the Zahmer Kaiser range, it is not surprising that the Pyramidenspitze makes a popular ascent, and it will be a rare day in summer if you have the route to yourself. Though strenuous in places, there’s nothing technically difficult in the ascent, but there are one or two minor sections with a certain amount of exposure.
The map shows two routes from the Vorderkaiserfelden Hut; that which is described here climbs the extreme western end of the Zahmer Kaiser ridge on path no 95. As you gain height the way skirts along the south side of the 1638m Naunspitze, then kinks right to gain the 1745m summit of the Petersköpfl.
The route now eases along a plateau among dwarf pine below the crags of Einserkogel and Zwölferkogel, descends a short and narrow gully, the so-called Vogelbadkimmen, after which you then cross the Elferkogel (1916m) to gain the summit of the Pyramidenspitze about 2½hrs after leaving the hut.
The summit panorama is extensive, stretching along the Northern Limestone Alps from the Zugspitze to the Hochkönig. It also includes the glacial Stubai Alps and looks down on the Walchsee and across the Kaisertal to major peaks of the Wilder Kaiser. A short distance to the south rises the highest of Zahmer Kaiser summits, the 2001m Vordere Kesselschneid.
Note:Via ferrata (klettersteig) enthusiasts may be interested to know that a 400m protected route makes the ascent of the Pyramidenspitze from the east, and is usually approached from Winkelalm.
