MAINTENANCE

Even the most low-maintenance of spaces requires some looking after. Although it is not necessary to carry out all of these jobs each year, this section will provide a guide on what to look out for.

JANUARY

Ensure that all irrigation lines are drained to prevent freezing water from damaging them.

FEBRUARY

Service your lighting system, replacing wiring, bulbs or lamps if required.

MARCH

Sweep up spent foliage that has dropped from surrounding gardens.

APRIL

Turn on your irrigation system when plants begin actively growing.

MAY

Feed all plants with a slow-release fertilizer.

JUNE

Remove all dead, damaged or diseased foliage from your plants.

Give all topiary pieces a light cut in order to keep them in shape.

JULY

Top up bark-chip mulch in the borders.

AUGUST

Midway through the season, it is a good idea to pressure wash your paving to remove ingrained dirt and algae, and to keep it looking good.

SEPTEMBER

If necessary, re-oil your deck while the weather is still dry.

OCTOBER

Clean and store away additional garden furniture, if you don’t intend to use it through the winter.

NOVEMBER

Continue brushing up fallen leaves that stray into the space from surrounding gardens.

DECEMBER

Turn off your irrigation system while plants are dormant. Remove the timer, to protect it against winter weather.

Raised beds make maintenance easy and raise plants closer to eye level to be better enjoyed. The wall also doubles as a backrest to the bench seats. A change in height in the lower retainer allows for an armrest and extra seating when entertaining friends.

A successful minimalist garden is all about attention to detail. Every aspect of the landscaping must be millimetre perfect. Repeated topiary plants, such as these box balls, must be clipped with great precision.
