Chapter 18

Skull heard a thud and his head turned towards the backdoor. He started for it and Joyce pulled the gun from her lap.

“Kid what do you think you’re doing?”

Skull froze in place.

“I heard something at the door. It could be Jax!”

“And it could be that other prick who tried to take my daughter.”

Jodie put her hand on Joyce’s arm.

“Better to let him get the door and see what happens. We got the gun and can take cover if needed.” Jodie tried to ease her mother’s mind.

“Fine, go check it out.”

Skull made his way over to the door slowly. It had no window to look out of. Cracked the door and hit something.

“Motherfucker!”

Jax growled in pain as the door hit him in the face. Holding his face, he stepped back. His eyes weren’t fully healed stuff was still blurry for him. Skull heard his voice and stuck his head out.

“Move back.”

Skull opened the door for him and pulled him inside, then locked the door behind him. Jax was still in demon form. Still holding his face Jax could feel something running down it.

“Christ!”

Skull removed Jax’s hand from his face to look Jax over. “You’ll be okay. Let me see if I can heal you.”

Jax blinked hard, seeing Skull’s outline.

“How did find your way back?” Skull put his hands on Jax’s head.

“Blind luck I think. That and I followed my own scent.”

As he spoke, Skull closed his eyes trying to use his magic to heal him. A purple light came from Skull. Jax growled as pain hit his eyes, then his face. Blinking again, Skull came into view, and over Skull’s shoulder, Jax could see Jodie and Joyce. Both females stared at him in shock. A look of fear was on their faces. Joyce had the gun pointed at both Jax and Skull. If they even blinked wrong, she was going to put a hole in both of them.

Jax’s eyes fell on Jodie. She looked so lost. Her auburn hair was a mess, but it made her look stunning. Jax wasn’t sure what to call the clothes she had on. They looked like what he saw some of the men at the gym wear.

“How are you doing?” He looked at Jodie. Jodie blinked. She was lost in thought, even though she was scared to death. Her mind was in overdrive. Demons were real, and she’d created them. If that wasn’t enough to make her check into the looney bin, because of it, her mother was almost killed. A lump started in her throat. She’d lost enough people she loved in her life.

Clearing her throat, she looked at him.

“Oh, sure, I’m great. I’m in some old musty, dusty, and crusty museum with demons. My mother almost died and all of this...” Jodie waved her hand in a circle. “...is my fault. I keep thinking I’m on my couch and this is all a fucked up dream. I’m gonna wake up to Boston licking my face, or Terry standing over me telling me I’m late for a meeting.”

As she crossed her arms over her chest she didn’t know why, but she was angry as hell right now.

Jax blinked at her. He didn’t know how to respond to her. He had never been good at talking to the opposite sex. The only time he had was in that meat suit he just got rid of.

“Would it make you more comfortable if I was in new meat suit?”

Both women’s brows arched.

“And how would you do that?” Joyce was curious about them. She tried to recall Jodie’s story about them, but her mind was drawing a blank.

Jax went to open his mouth to tell them and Skull shook his head no.

“Trust me ladies, you really don’t want to know. It’s rather gross.”

Joyce already wanted to shoot them both, and if they told the ladies how they took human form, Skull was sure she would do it just on principal.

“I think I can handle it. I’m grown woman!” Jodie glared at them.

Jax swallowed, his mouth was suddenly dry.

“We have to absorb them.”

Jodie’s brows furrowed together. “What do you mean by absorb them?”

Skull closed his eyes for a moment before speaking. Since they hadn’t freaked out about the light he cast when he healed Jax he assumed they didn’t see it.

“If you promise not to shoot us, I’ll explain!”

Joyce’s brow didn’t move as she thought it over. “I can’t promise I won’t shoot you, but let’s see it kid.”

“Well I can’t really show you right now.”

Jodie sighed. “Okay just get it over with.”

“Well you see we have to absorb them by eating them. Once we swallow them we turn into them, and we absorb their thoughts, memories, and knowledge!”

Both Jodie and Joyce’s mouth dropped open. Joyce pulled the gun up so fast Jodie jumped a bit.

Skull and Jax bolted away from Joyce.

“Oh, hell no! You’re not eating my daughter or myself!”
