The next afternoon my papa called a family meeting. Yes, another one.
We were all once again in the lobby—me, the family, Alonzo, and Max.
“It seems,” my papa started, that we had a food critic in last night.” And with that he looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
“I forgot all about that!” I exclaimed. Oh, no. Was this it then? The final straw?
“Well, he talk a lot about the vitals of course. The food, the wine list, the ambience, and service. All exceptional. But then, well then he veer off the road a bit.”
I couldn’t breathe. Max put a paw in my lap. Maybe he couldn’t breathe either.
“So he say,” Papa continued, “I was prepared to indulge myself at Try The Veal, alone, enjoying their varied courses and fine wine. I was not, however, prepared for what I got. What I got, besides the fabulous food and charming décor, was a dog. A big, hairy, gentle giant named Max. I wondered about hygiene, hair, and all things dog, but I shouldn’t have. The owners have done their jobs when it comes to having a dog, of all things, inside a fine dining restaurant.
“I saw a woman get delivered very fresh fish. Perhaps more fresh than she wanted. Although slapping her with the fish would’ve been more appropriate considering how rude she was. I saw a couple on their fiftieth wedding anniversary have their romance rekindled. I saw the happiest wedding party I’ve ever seen due to the magic of a special dog and a special room and naturally a very special restaurant. But none of those things are what captivated me the most. I was seated by a maître d named Max. He had four legs and a tail, and I was utterly charmed. And so were the rest of the clientele I talked to. Bravo, Max, salute! And grazie! I will be back soon and I’ll be sure to bring my family next time.”
With a flourish my papa put the paper on the table.
My Nonna smacked her hands and said, “He may be hungry but he not crazy! He stay!”
I hugged Max, and I swear he hugged me right back.
