When Jesus and His disciples gathered for the Passover meal, why did Jesus wash everyone’s feet?
Foot washing was a task typically delegated to the lowest slave. It removed the dust, mud, and other filth encountered on the unpaved roads in and around Jerusalem. Evidently there was no servant to perform the task when Jesus and the disciples arrived. Instead of humbling themselves to perform such a demeaning task for one another, the disciples had simply left their feet unwashed. Taking the role of the lowest servant, Christ transformed the washing into an object lesson about humility and true holiness (John 13:6–9).
