I have a confession to make. I am terrible at astrology. It makes me crazy. My theory has always been that this is because serious astrological charts are too much like math. I see the words degrees and trine, and I get twitchy. However, maybe even perversely, I made up my mind a few years ago to try and learn something—anything—about astrology.
I approached this topic not unlike someone else would move toward a bomb—very, very carefully. I stood back, considered the options, and asked myself what would be the simplest thing I could take apart to see how it magickally ticked. Maybe if I just sort of eased in? Being a perfectionist, I worried that it would blow up in my face, and I’d end up only confusing myself more. Then I had to snicker and think how my astrologically talented Witch friends would roll their eyes and accuse me of being such a worrywort Virgo.
I finally decided to focus on the Sun signs. To my surprise, I really enjoyed learning more about the magickal possibilities of the twelve signs of the zodiac. Also, I think I gravitated to this topic because sun signs correspond with some of the Major Arcana cards in the tarot, and the twelve sun signs all break down into four elemental categories. The fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. The earth signs consist of Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. The air signs encompass Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Finally, the water signs cover Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. I had explored the elemental sign angle before, but now it was time to really see what I could learn. I have to admit it was a lot of fun. (Somewhere, some hardcore astrologer just slumped over in a dead faint because I dared to use the word “fun” while describing the zodiac and magick. We can give them a few moments to recover.) In the meantime, I urge you to remember my motto: magick is a joyous thing. So let’s have some fun, shall we?
In my opinion, the best part about working magick with the different zodiac signs is that this allows you to work seasonal witchery as the year progresses. You can tap in to the magickal energy that is present during each sun sign and ride the wheel of the cosmos—no matter what your personal sun sign happens to be. Yes, that’s right.
