OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS MY RESEARCH FOR THE EDITION OF THIS CORRESPONDENCE FOUND ME MOST OF THE TIME ALONE AT MY DESK OR IN OBSCURE ARCHIVES AND LIBRARIES AROUND THE WORLD. Despite this lonesome task I was always aware that at the end of the day this work has always been a team effort and would not have been possible without the support and help of many who need to be mentioned here as an integral part of this project.
