Chapter 34

Nathan

image

I really don’t know how Mr Prick does it.

Clicks his fingers- there’s a jet waiting for us.

Clicks his fingers- everyone jumps.

Clicks his fingers- the world goes to shit.

The witch I’m now watching cradling Daniel, probably has less of the craft than him. I keep my untrusting eyes on her as she lies him down on the rug. She’s a kooky woman with a mothering vibe. But she’s a witch. Witches are like vampires I guess, dangerous.

She’s chanting some gibberish, smiling down, making Daniel clap his hands. He likes her. His big eyes are smiling as she sings away to him.

“Nathan,” Sara calls me from the kitchen door, gesturing her head.

I make my way into the kitchen to see she’s zipping up a black leather overnight bag. That bag isn’t mine. It was agreed that she would stay behind and take care of Daniel.

“Nathan. Adrien, Ben, and Dom, are setting off now. I’ll come with you,” she says.

“No. You need to look after Daniel. Take him back to the UK. This is what Adrien wants.” I’m really meaning, it’s what I want also.

“I don’t care what he wants. You’re going to need my help.” She’s giving me those stubborn sexy eyes. “Daniel will be safe with Gwen.”

“Fuck, Sara. You can’t do this.”

Great. She’s putting me in the position in which I’ll have to choose who I care about the most. When the shit hits the fan over there in Prague, it will be impossible to decide who is more important to me.

“I know what this is.” She waves her finger at me. “This is your fucking crush on Liz again, isn’t it. You want to be her white knight on his steed. Go in there and rescue her!”

“It isn’t like that, Sara!”

“Yes it is. She already has her knight.” Her words hit me like a lightning bolt. She’s jealous. It’s so blatantly obvious.

“Now is not the time to let your feelings get in the way. We all have a job to do. And you being like this is not going to help!”

“You asshole.”

She goes to storm away, but I grab her arm and force her to face me. “I care about you. There, I’ve admitted it.”

Fuck, this is going to blow up in my face any second. Her eyes hate me for not saying the L word. But I can’t say it, when I don’t know whether it’s true. It’s like admitting a lie to make a situation easier. The L word is the same as saying sorry. If it’s not a fact, then you don’t say it.

She shakes away from my hold, picks up her bag, and drops it by the back door. I’m going to have to do something here that’s near damn impossible. I’m going to choose, once and for all.

“Sara. This thing between us. Well it’s... well it’s over.”

I watch her shoulders hunch forward. She purrs like a wild cat ready to turn and gouge out my eyes. What she doesn’t understand is that secretly, I don’t want it to end. I want to see where it goes. But right now, I can’t even think about a future with her. Not when I don’t know if I’ll make it back.

“Well...” She turns to me and I’m struck by a hidden sadness in her eyes. “I think that it’s for the best.”

I make my way over to her. I want to hold her, but I won’t.

I look down into her blue eyes. “Please, stay here with Daniel.”

God, I want to crush my lips against her mouth. I’m hungry for it. We both are, staring at each other, waiting to see who will make the first move.

Adrien suddenly comes blazing through the kitchen, holding a fucking sword of all things. He’s such a dick. The moment with Sara has gone, and it may never happen again.

“Nathan, get in the car. Not going to wait for you any longer.” He goes quiet, his eyes jumping from me to Sara. “Oh, Jesus, you two are fucking?” Wow, if he didn’t have that sword in his hand, my fist would be striking his face. “Sara, I need your head in the game. Not on him.”

“I’m fucking standing right here,” I yell at him.

“Sara, do you have a problem taking care of Daniel?” he asks.

“Of course not. I’ve been the one looking after him all this time. Not you,” she snaps back.

He stands there, eyeing us both up and down, and an awkward moment occurs because he knows he’s interrupted something deep.

“Just hurry the hell up.” He bangs open the door and leaves.

I turn back to look at Sara. “Look after Daniel.”

“Give me some credit,” she snarls.

“Look after yourself too.”

I make my way to the back door, calling myself a weak asshole, but find Sara’s hand clutching at mine. I close my eyes, knowing that if I look at her, I’ll tell her I love her. And I can’t do it.

“Stay alive,” she says, releasing my hand.

She’s gone, and it’s for the best. Now it’s all about finding Liz.
