BEWARE OF THE VICTIM trap. It can be very easy when we are in despair to default to victimhood. “Why me? Why did this have to happen to me??”
Why did it happen to you? Ultimately, it doesn’t matter because it did happen to you, and it’s an experience that can and will form and shape you. This is the stuff that heroes are made of. For every challenging trial that you go through, you are developing the very strength you will need to do your work in the world. This is the honing of your craft.
A client with fibromyalgia I worked with years ago, through her own long trial, developed a depth of knowledge about how to ease the headaches, muscle pain, cognition issues, sleep disturbances and mood swings of this condition. She developed such a foundation of knowledge that she decided to help others with fibromyalgia. She now knows that it was her calling to go through her own hero’s journey so that she would be able to help others. She has eased the pain of hundreds who are suffering from this debilitating condition through her practice and her writings. If she had gotten mired in the snare of believing that she didn’t deserve this fate, which she easily could have, considering how debilitating it is to deal with fibromyalgia, she would never have been open to how the challenge was directing her to her unique way to serve.
Life is our greatest teacher, taking us down the winding paths of change and transformation and helping us gain a profound awareness of our gifts, and our potential to serve.
