RESEARCHERS

For help with this edition, Rick relied on...

Amanda Buttinger

Amanda came to Madrid 20 years ago for what was to be a short adventure. But she‘s still there today, living with her husband and two engergetic boys (the handsomest chulapos in Madrid). She maintains her American roots while enjoying madrileño and Spanish traditions, and leading Rick Steves tours through Spain and the Basque Country.

Pål Bjarne Johansen

A tour guide and guidebook researcher for Rick Steves’ Europe (covering Scandinavia and Spain), Pål grew up in the Norwegian countryside near Oslo. He discovered his passion for travel at a young age and has backpacked much of the world. He first visited Spain with his family when he was four and has been back numerous times since, to this land that he considers his second home. When he’s not working for Rick Steves, you’ll find Pål skiing the Norwegian woods in winter and sailing the seven seas in summer.

Robert Wright

Raised in Memphis, Robert funded his first dream trip to Europe in 1998 by selling his entire Star Wars collection—proof that where there’s a will, there’s a way. He fell in love with Spain and Portugal and constantly returned, all while living for 14 years in Argentina. In the end, Robert married a sevillano and moved to Spain. He enjoys exploring small town Iberia and uncovering long-lost connections between Spain and Portugal’s intertwined history.
