Chapter 2

But when Dani was in year two at school, it happened again!

Just as the winter break was about to start, Dani’s father got sad again. He felt so awful he had to go away for a while to think about other things.

He thought it would do him good to go to Rome, the city where he was born, and talk with his mother, Lucia, and his brother, Giuseppe.

And Giuseppe’s wife, Donatella. And their children, Rosanna and Alessandro.

Dani wanted to go too. It was years since she’d seen her Italian family.

But that wasn’t to be. Her father had decided to go on his own. He needed to think about his life.

“It’s not good for you to be with someone so sad!” he said.

“Can’t you say why you’re that way?” Dani tried.

But he didn’t want to talk about it.

Instead of going to Rome, Dani went to live with Grandma and Grandpa again.

This break wouldn’t be much fun, she thought, when Grandma came to get her and the hamsters. The people next door had promised to look after Cat.

Dani left Home Street with a heavy heart.

But Grandma was thrilled! Having Dani in the house was the best thing she could think of.
