Cushion wasn’t happy either about the break from school.
A whole week without Dani!
How could he bear it?
As soon as he got up on the first morning, he started to think. And soon he had an idea.
He’d go over to Dani’s house with a little surprise…
When the flower shop opened, Cushion was there waiting to buy Dani a flower, a red rose. The most beautiful one they had.
It was expensive, but he’d been given some money by his grandmother, so he had enough.
Then he hurried to the yellow house on Home Street and rang the doorbell.
To his disappointment it wasn’t Dani who came to the door, but her father, Gianni.
“Is Dani awake yet?” Cushion asked.
“I’m sorry,” said her father. “Dani’s with her grandma and grandpa.”
Cushion peered into the hallway, as if he didn’t think he’d heard properly.
“I’m in a bit of a hurry, on my way to the airport,” Gianni said impatiently.
“Without Dani?”
“Yes, unfortunately. This time. I’m not feeling well and need to talk with my mother. See you later, Cushion!”
But Cushion stood there, thinking to himself.
What should he do with the rose?
“I was going to give her this.” He held out the rose.
Dani’s father gave it a bewildered look.
“She’d love that!” he said.
“But she won’t be home before it’s wilted.”
“I can take it to her,” Cushion suggested. “Can you give me the address?”
“What address?”
“Of her grandma and grandpa.”
“Are you thinking you’ll take the train?”
“No, my dad will drive me.”
Gianni went into the hallway and wrote on a piece of paper.
“They live on the other side of town,” he explained. “Quite far away.”
“Yeah, okay,” muttered Cushion, and he took the piece of paper and went on his way.
