A Note on Texts

Heinlein’s final versions are the texts used here. He himself revised several early works for book publication, and others were edited (usually shortened) before their initial publication. Although a study of Heinlein’s revisions would be valuable and although a case can be made for the authority of some edited versions, this book refers to the author’s preferred texts. The only exception is Podkayne of Mars, since the Baen edition makes possible a comparison of the novel’s multiple endings.

Since Heinlein’s fiction is available very widely, page citations to a specific edition would be a bothersome affectation. Again there’s an exception: Grumbles from the Grave, the posthumous volume of excerpts from Heinlein’s correspondence. Critical works by other writers are cited by page.

Heinlein’s letter in the last chapter is quoted from the Frederik Pohl Papers, Special Collections Research Collections Research Center, Syracuse University Library.
