ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Rick Marschall has written or edited sixty-five books, and hundreds of magazine articles, mostly in the field of American popular culture. A former political cartoonist, he has been an editor at three newspapers and at Marvel Comics, and a script writer for Disney Comics. His vintage-cartoon reprint projects have won awards in the United States, France, Germany, and Italy. Marschall has spoken overseas on behalf of the U.S. Information Service of the State Department, and in 1995 he was consultant to the U.S. Postal Service for the 20-stamp commemorative series, American Comic Classics.
Marschall is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honorary society (for “Conspicuous Attainments and Scholarship in the Field of History”). He holds a BA in American History from the American University in Washington, D.C., and his Master's Thesis (American Studies) was on the early American graphic satire magazines. His specialty is the period between the Civil War and World War I, with emphasis on Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. His collection of vintage newspapers and magazines, political and paper Americana, cartoon and advertising items, books and original artwork, is among the largest of such private collections in America. Bostonia magazine has called Marschall “perhaps America's foremost authority on popular culture.”
Marschall established Rosebud Archives, specializing in reclaiming vintage American graphic art in various media, with Jon Barli (www.rosebudarchives.com, where additional citations and material about BULLY! can be found). Lately Marschall has been active in the Christian field, producing a weekly blog, Monday Morning Music Ministry, and writing a biography of Johann Sebastian Bach for Thomas Nelson Publishers (2011). He currently edits the sesquicentennial e-downloads of Harper's Weekly, the Civil War era newspaper (http://www.harpersweekly-thecivilwaryears.com) and is Contributing Editor to Hogan's Alley, The Journal of the Cartoon Arts.
