Nugget #38
Stop Every Day and Look at the Size of God

Who is God? What is His personality? What are His character traits?

According to the Bible, He is everlasting, just, caring, holy, divine, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, and sovereign. He is light, perfection, abundance, salvation, wisdom, and love. He is our creator, savior, deliverer, redeemer, provider, healer, advocate, and friend. Never forget who lives inside you: “The LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods” (Ps. 95:3).

Even though it is humanly impossible to comprehend the immensity of God, we should still lean on his bigness. Isaiah revealed Him this way:

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? . . . He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. (40:12, 22)

Everything you have ever seen above, around, and below is still not a dot in God’s vastness. Yet, despite being this large, He still cares for every one of us. He is the one “who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” as 1 Timothy 2:4 (NKJV) states, and 2 Peter 3:9 says that He is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (NKJV). God’s desire is to have all people rescued and to know Him so He can abundantly bless them with His goodness.

Psalm 147:4 says that God knows how many stars there are and that He has a name for every one of them! But you are much more important to God than the stars. God cares about every detail of your life, and He sees every tear that is cried. He hears every prayer that is prayed, and He never forgets anyone’s name.

Jesus taught that even the tiny little sparrows are watched over. “Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows” (Luke 12:6–7 NKJV). Think about it! God knows how many hairs are on everyone’s head! (And in my case, it’s getting easier and easier for Him to count them every year!) Not even one little bird is forgotten by God!

I often travel by air, and one of the benefits is the glimpse I get of God’s perspective. I like looking at my challenges from 37,000 feet above the earth. I can see that no problem is too large for God’s intervention and marvel that no person is too small for God’s attention. Never let the size of your problem determine your size of God. Don’t talk about the size of your mountain; talk to the one who can move it.

God is able. If you don’t need miracles, you don’t need God. My friend Dave Bordon said it best: “I don’t understand the situation, but I understand God.” It’s just dumb not to believe in God and His bigness. I don’t know any other way to say it.

An atheist created a case in court against the upcoming Easter and Passover holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians, Jews, and observances of their holy days. The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days.

The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel, declaring, “Case dismissed!”

The lawyer immediately stood and objected to the ruling, saying, “Your Honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter, and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur, and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holiday.”

The judge leaned forward in his chair and said, “But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant. The calendar says April 1 is April Fools’ Day. Psalm 14:1 states, ‘The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”’ Thus, it is the opinion of this court that if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1 is his day. Court is adjourned.”

Don’t be foolish. What a wonderful, big God we serve. Take time every day to realize it. God is bigger than__________. (Fill in the blank for your own life.)
