Think about how good it feels to be invited to something. An invitation is a welcome mat, a way of saying, “I would like you to enter into my life in this capacity,” be it for a celebration of some sort or a simple visit. No doubt spirits will try to contact you if they want to, but if you invite them to contact you, the chances are much greater that they will, because they know for certain that you are open to their presence. Rose’s story is an ideal example of that.
Rose works from home for a dentist doing computer data entry. She had just finished cutting the grass one summer day and had come inside to do some paperwork for her boss before showering. “It was already evening,” Rose said. “I turned on my computer and the nearby lamp. Then I said out loud, ‘Hey, baby girl, how are you doing?’ ”
Her “baby girl” was her youngest child, Madison. They called her Madi. She had died a few weeks earlier at the age of twenty. Madi had been born with severe disabilities that included neuromuscular damage. When she had been able to talk and had some movement in her body, which was until about her teenage years, she loved to sing, dance, float in water, and even ride horses. When she lost her voice and mobility, she enjoyed everything audiovisual, including listening to music, watching television, and having books read to her. She had three siblings — Charity, Jorge, and Christopher — who treated her no differently than they treated each other. They included her in whatever activities they did, teased her, and made her laugh. Madi was a very loving and happy girl who enjoyed the life she’d been given.
As any parent who has suffered the loss of a child will tell you, there is no greater pain. Since Madi passed, Rose had carried a lot of grief that tied her stomach in knots almost daily. To try to quell her nerves, she would ask Madi several times throughout each day how she was doing.
This evening was the first time Rose would receive a response.
“The second after I asked her how she was, my computer screen faded,” she said. “Then the lamp faded. There was no dimmer on the lamp, and all the connections on the computer were fine. At first, I assumed we were having a power outage, but I looked into my bedroom across the hall and the lights were normal. The computer came back on after a few seconds, but then it dimmed again. The light had even more of a mind of its own, going from bright to dark to bright to dark, repeatedly. I got up and checked other rooms; everything electrical was working as it should have.”
Nothing that was happening scared Rose; it puzzled her more than anything. But, after confirming that the rest of the house was in order, and after seeing her computer and light continue to do their own thing, she realized what was happening: she’d asked a question, and she was receiving an answer.
“I felt a presence, a really good feeling inside, and I knew it was my daughter,” she said. “There was an energy around me that I had never felt before. It was very strong, very comforting. Then I had a feeling in my mind — like a voice, but not a voice. It was like when you suddenly recall a phone number or address. It was just a feeling of knowing, of knowing that it was Madi who was doing this. I felt a sense of happiness and peace that washed away my anxiety. She was letting me know that she heard me and that she was okay.”
Rose said Madi wanted the family to celebrate that she was so happy now. “She didn’t want us to miss her in the physical, because that wasn’t her. She wanted us to know that no matter how difficult her life had been, she was released from all of that now. She was in a good place.”
After Rose soaked in the energy and let the feelings she felt about Madi play out for several seconds, everything returned to normal.
“The lamp brightened and stayed bright, and the computer screen came on and stayed on,” Rose said. “It was one of those moments that, when it’s over, makes you say, ‘Did that really just happen?’ It did really happen, and it continues to bring me peace today.”
Rose said it made sense that Madi sent her that sign when she did.
“It had been a few weeks since she had died, and I was miserable, with no end to that feeling in sight. There probably wasn’t much she could have done to get my attention while I was talking to her earlier as I was cutting the grass, but it was easy with the computer and light. I am always in there working, so it was the perfect place for her to make me aware of her presence.”
The computer and light have not faded or dimmed since.
“I think she told me what she needed to and what she knew I needed to hear. She calmed my fears. She knows now that I am going to be able to get through the difficult days. It was a very moving experience that put me on a path toward healing. And now I know that whenever I ask my baby girl how she is doing, she is really listening to me.”
Would Madi have contacted her when she did if her mom had not asked her how she was doing? I believe she would have, since Rose was hurting so deeply from the loss and frequently talked to Madi. The office was the perfect place for them to connect because it was Rose’s private space and had electrical devices to manipulate. By asking her daughter how she was doing, Rose was setting the intention. She wasn’t just thinking about Madi; she was talking to her, even asking a question that only her daughter could answer.
When you find yourself thinking about a lost loved one, speak to them, be it in your mind or out loud. Invite them to enter your life and to communicate with you. Usually you will find that the more often you set your intention, the more obvious the signs will be.
