Chapter 39

Maddie was concerned. In the years she had worked for Elite, she had never known Stephanie to be so distant. Not that her employer was one to share her innermost thoughts, but working closely together had given Maddie an almost sixth sense in regard to her moods.

She’d been unusually optimistic before staying at Browns. But that had changed by the time she returned. Even now, a couple of weeks later, she was still a little distant, and nothing like her usual self. Something must have happened in those few days, Maddie decided, wondering what it could be and if it had a bearing on the future of the agency.

She hoped not. It was probably nothing. Either way she hoped it did not mean she would be without a job in the new year.

But it wasn’t just that.

Things were changing. Anna was no longer working for Elite. She’d left last week. Stephanie had been philosophical about it, and that too had seemed strange. Normally she went out of her way to keep her better girls—those in constant demand.

Maddie would miss her. They’d agree to keep in touch. Meet for coffee, or a night out in town. But it wouldn’t be the same.
