You have chosen a name, now you need a business card.

A business card is one of the most important ingredients to a successful business. It is often the last thing you give a client, and how he or she will keep a record of your information for future business. Very few people still use a Rolodex. Now, a high percentage of people take your card and when they get home or back to their own office, they scan it right into their contacts and throw the physical card away. But if it is in their contacts, the next time they need a notary, they will reach out to you.

The card needs to include:

Certain states may require a disclaimer on the card that says you are not an attorney. Refer to “Tools” on our website for more information about your specific state requirements.

To start, design the card yourself and order the cards in small quantities because you will find yourself needing to make changes as your business continues to grow. It took me one year to be happy with the format and the logo and I still continuously make edits as we add services and make changes.

Keep your fonts large enough to be able to be easily read. There is nothing worse than having to squint to read a phone number.

Another thing to keep in mind— it is sometimes better to have two cards. In my business I have a card for “notarizations” and a card for “apostilles.” Apostilles are very specialized and I found that when I was pitching that kind of work, telling people I could do them, but handing them a card all about notaries, it was not working for me. I created a second company which has its own business card and sometimes I pass along both cards when appropriate.

I would recommend Vista Print (www.vistaprint.com) for personalized business cards. Their prices are good, and they are helpful and most importantly they are user friendly.

NEVER GIVE OUT A BUSINESS CARD WITH A TYPO. This is very important. It reflects who you are, and although people may not say anything, they will notice. They will ask themselves: if you don’t pay attention to your business card, what will you do with their work?
