PART V

INTO ACTION

The articles in Part V, Into Action, are included to help guide high-potentials themselves to success. We open this section with “Effectively Influencing Decision Makers” by Marshall Goldsmith. In his article, Marshall puts forth eleven guidelines, which are intended to help high-potentials do a better job of influencing decision makers. High-potentials who read “From the FastForward Playbook: Successfully Transition into Bigger Roles” by Patricia Wheeler before they begin their upward journey, will greatly benefit from her Playbook, which offers clear action steps and words of wisdom from those who’ve already made successful transitions. In Chapter Twenty-Five, “Strength in Numbers: The Advantage of Being a Top Team,” Lawrence S. Levin discusses “Top Teams” that are such because they vigilantly examine and reexamine their stated focus in order to adapt successfully to the ever-changing environment and economy in which they do business. In “Double Your Value,” Mark C. Thompson and Bonita S. Buell-Thompson reveal nine steps that will help high-potentials dramatically increase their value. Finally, Stephen A. Miles and Nathan Bennett propel the analogy of coaches, teams, and individual players on the sports field to their relevance in the corporate arena in “Creating Winners in the Career Game: What Every Player and Coach Needs to Know.”
