PART VII

COACHING FOR LEADERSHIP—PREMIUM WEB CONTENT

Part VII: Coaching for Leadership: Premium Web Content, is the final section of Coaching for Leadership 3e. You won’t find these chapters in the printed book, but you will find them at www.pfeiffer.com/go/GoldsmithCF3. We recommend that those new to the subject of leadership coaching peruse these chapters. Beginning this section is “Ten Suggestions for Successful Peer Coaching,” by Robert M. Fulmer and John E. Brock, in which the authors lay the groundwork for peer coaching as a viable alternative to professional coaching, then provide concrete suggestions on how to make the process run more efficiently. In “Coaching Executives for Succession,” Linda D. Sharkey explores succession planning and how a skilled coach can help the organization assess high-potential successors for executive positions and also assist the new leader as he or she transitions into the new role. In the field of executive coaching, multi-rater feedback report is crucial. In their article, “Why 360s Don’t Work and How They Can,” Marc Effron and Miriam Ort examine this sixty-year-old performance tool and point out its shortcomings. Originally published in Coaching for Leadership (1e), Bruce Lloyd’s “Leadership and Power: Where Responsibility Makes the Difference” discusses the coach’s role in managing the relationships between responsibility, leadership, and learning, and shows how the nature and role of power and its abuse can change the dynamics of these relationships within a situation or organization. The classic Nancy Adler piece, “Coaching Executives: Women Succeeding Globally,” takes an international view on women leaders and shows how issues in their career development may be addressed through coaching. Finally, in his article “Coaching the Coaches,” Dave Ulrich illustrates an important philosophy of coaching: “Coaching does not mean doing for others, but means helping others to get things done.”
