ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

BOOKS ARE MAGICAL organic things not written by one person, but influenced by many. To that end, I’d like to acknowledge a couple folks, knowing I’ll fail to think of someone obvious.

First of all, I’d like to acknowledge my dad, Hank McMahon, who died three days before this book was bought. The timing was bittersweet, but he was my best friend and role model, and I know he’s paging through this in Heaven.

The next nod goes to my superhero agent, Marly Rusoff, who took a chance on my first book. And when it didn’t sell, (like a tough-love mom) she simply said, “If you’re a writer, go write another book”—which is this.

The third thank-you is for author Jerrilyn Farmer. She has been my workshop critic, cheerleader, and friend for years. Without her pushing, this doesn’t happen.

To Maggie, Noah, and Zoey, you are my faith, heart, and ferocity. I love you without limit and am grateful for your patience. To my mom, I thank you for a life of support, unconditional love, and the fearless optimism that is your brand alone.

I would like to acknowledge the writers who have made me a better writer and this a better book: Chad Porter, Beverly Graf, Glen Erik Hamilton, Alexandra Jamison, Kathy Norris, and Eachan Holloway.

To my brother, Andy, who gave great feedback on the first book, and to my sisters, Kerry and Bette, who always assumed it would happen. And thanks to Allison Stover, guide on all things Georgia.

To the folks who hosted me in the great state of Georgia—some of the best people anywhere. To the Putnam team, from art and marketing to proofing and publicity.

Final shout-out goes to Mark Tavani at Putnam. Mark is passionate, precise, and answers all questions with intelligent thought. He helped me rewrite, and as any good teacher will tell you, writing is rewriting.

P. T. Marsh will be back. Stay tuned.
