@eszterdavidtattoo

Eszter David is a tattoo artist at Parliament Tattoo in London. She fell in love with tattooing at age 14 when her mum got a big tattoo. The first tattoo Eszter did was a freehand tribal design for her friend to cover up an older piece. Eszter jokes: “We are still friends! Making the first tattoo makes you smile for days!” Personally, she now has a few smaller tattoos, including a triangle, some dots, letters, and a love heart.

Eszter believes there is now less stigma surrounding tattoos, although facial and hand tattoos can still be a problem. For this reason, she feels the best place for a tiny tattoo is on the arms, legs, sternum, or back, or perhaps behind the ear. That said, she advises people considering a tattoo against getting them on the face or hand. Eszter also suggests that people do their research thoroughly to find a tattoo artist with a style they like. She feels that trust between the artist and the client is essential too. As Eszter points out: “Good tattoos aren’t cheap; cheap tattoos aren’t good.”

Artistic influences, designs, and techniques

In terms of artistic influences, Eszter is inspired by nearly everything. She has a collection of books at home that she turns to when stuck for ideas. She finds her coworkers are also a huge influence on her work.

image

@eszterdavidtattoo

Eszter particularly enjoys tattooing ornamental features, Egyptian designs, statues, and anything involving fine lines, from flowers to geometric shapes. For ornamental pieces, Eszter usually only needs to know which part of the body she is going to tattoo before she starts drawing to ensure the design will fit the area. She then simply uses the best technique for the design. Eszter comments, “These designs I just draw from my head, as I’ve been tattooing them for years now.” However, she generally makes a quick sketch first, which usually takes only a few minutes, before finalizing the design the next day or the following week. Eszter really enjoys everything about tattooing, including the drawing process, peeling off the stencil, the sound of the machines, and the smell of disinfectant. As Eszter explains, “I love seeing a happy client with a healed tattoo!”
